The DeTomaso Pantera enjoyed modest success in America, and the early Pantera models could be purchased through Lincoln-Mercury dealers, but in 1974, they were dropped from the line due to emissions regulations. Carroll Shelby had caught lightning in a bottle once before with the Cobra by mating an existing ACE body and chassis with his upgraded Ford engine, and he saw an opportunity to recreate that success, so he ordered 5 Panteras without engines to experiment with. No doubt he felt that the new, wider bodied Pantera would be able to handle the power and torque of nearly any engine he chose, and this example was fitted with a potent 351 Cleveland V-8 and a 5-speed manual gearbox, and is also equipped with the rare flat factory rear wing.

The original purchase documents provided with the car show Carroll Shelby’s signature on the contract purchasing all 5 cars, as well as President of Carroll Shelby Incorporated Lew Spencer’s notes on the cars. The ownership is very well documented, and has been thoroughly researched before our consignor’s purchase out of a European collection. Many purveyors of Pantera parts have confirmed the car’s history as well, and the opportunity to own an actual Carroll Shelby car of this stature may never come around again. A copy of the insurance card for the car signed by Mr. Shelby, the 1986 EPA compliance test, and a Shelby Vehicle Authenticity Certificate all verify the Shelby signature affixed to the door sill.

This example – #9425 – has a well-documented 11,600 miles from new, and features air conditioning, leather interior, power brakes, power windows, MOMO steering wheel, new 15-inch Campagnolo wheels, and Veglia instruments. With just 189 total built in 1986, and the documented ownership by the legendary Carroll Shelby, it’s a true piece of automotive history that cannot be disputed. With robust performance, great design, and undeniable documentation, this fine Pantera GT5-S is a rare opportunity to own the very car that Carroll Shelby most admired back in 1986.
